October 31 2001 - Karanga Valley Camp (14,800')

Last night the clouds went away, and the peak was glowing brightly in the moon that's nearly full. And downhill in the valley was we got our first glimpse of "civilization" in a while, because we could see the lights of Moshi Town in the distance. This morning I woke up to the usual wake-up tea. They know what I like now, so I don't even have to tell them.

Climbing the Breakfast Wall this morning was a blast! The rocks weren't quite as challenging as Lava Tower, but I had a pack on this time so I'm glad it was a little easier. And, because the Breakfast Wall is the trail instead of a diversion, the porters had to climb it. If I hadn't seen it I wouldn't believe it, scaling rocks like that with a 40 or 50 pound load, half of it on top of the head. We went up and down a couple more ridges to arrive in camp, where the clouds cleared enough to give us some spectacular views of the peak.
