November 1 2001 - Barafu Camp (16,000')
Today we gained about 3,000 more feet, to about 16,000'. Plant life is now almost completely absent, but the ground is covered with volcanic shale that makes music (like a wind chime) when you walk on it, and that was fun. When we got to camp, it started snowing so we scrambled to get the tents up. I was pretty comfy with my snowboarding gear and all, but I imagine some of the crew must have been a bit wet and cold. You wouldn't know it though because they never complain. These guys are either cheerful or business-like, but I have yet to hear any of them get sour or bitter. I'm deeply impressed with their spirit.
We were hoping to camp an hour closer to the top, but we were informed that the spot we had in mind is closed. So the final ascent tonight (around midnight, we start) will be a little more challenging than planned, but that's okay. I'm feeling really strong and am very much looking forward to it. Well, except for the getting-up-at-midnight part, but I'll manage. :-)
